Navaratri day 4 bows to Kushmanda. Ku means ‘a little’, Ushma ‘warmth’ or ‘energy’ and Anda means ‘cosmic egg’. She creates the world with her smile and reminds her that a little power, in the correct form, can go a long way. .She is the source of the sun’s power. Without her, the sun’s light and energy will grow dim and fade away.
Goddess Katyayani, worshipped on the sixth day of Navaratri, was born to put an end to the evil spirits and was conceived as a warrior. She vanquished the demon Mahishasura and there are many beautiful hymns sung to her power (including my favourite, the mahishasura mardini strotam which I put on my link tree)..She is associated with the colour red, and with Goddess Parvati, as the primordial form of Shakti or cosmic energy.
