I have always delighted in Sudhir’s stories of Mulla Nasrudin so when I received Dr Kathleen Waller and Terry Freedman’s Substack post about the Mulla’s adventures, linking to Idries Shah’s collections, I rushed to get them. They were as delightful as I remembered, funny, sometimes baffling for the rational mind and they featured far more donkeys than Sudhir ever mentioned. Mulla Nasrudin is a wise fool character, a little like Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm. He says the unsayable, which contains a kernel of truth which often we do not want to see. I am lucky there are other three volumes of the Mulla’s adventures and I cannot wait to read them and encounter even more donkeys, wise fools, genuine creatures, and so dear to my heart.

The Mulla really is like a comfort but I find that I can also eat the whole box of chocolates in one sitting! Thankfully, reading these lovely stories is a little healthier …
