The Exploits of the Incomparable Mulla Nasrudin by Idries Shah****
Reading dates 21-29 September 2023
I have always delighted in Sudhir’s stories of Mulla Nasrudin so when I received Dr Kathleen Waller and Terry Freedman’s Substack post about the Mulla’s adventures, linking to Idries Shah’s collections, I rushed to get them. They were as delightful as I remembered, funny, sometimes baffling for the rational mind and they featured far more donkeys than Sudhir ever mentioned. Mulla Nasrudin is a wise fool character, a little like Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm. He says the unsayable, which contains a kernel of truth which often we do not want to see. I am lucky there are other three volumes of the Mulla’s adventures and I cannot wait to read them and encounter even more donkeys, wise fools, genuine creatures, and so dear to my heart.

Thanks for the mention, Laura. I’m pleased my article had an agreeable outcome. I find that I often draw on Nasrudin’s wise words and humour, not least to cam down when people wind me up!
Hi Terry, Thank you for writing back. I finished another Nasrudin book today and was thinking about your comment after a trying day. The Mulla really is like a comfort but I find that I can also eat the whole box of chocolates in one sitting! Thankfully, reading these lovely stories is a little healthier …
