Blue Lightning by Ann Cleeves (Shetland #4) *****
Reading Dates: 09 – 25 December 2020
Blue Lighting is one of the most perfect thrillers I have read. Ruthless, interesting and believable. It takes place in Fair Isle, off Shetland and the setting makes it feel almost like a locked room mystery. I could not work out who he murderer was and when it was revealed it made complete narrative sense. A real ahhhhhhh moment. The book felt very alive and messy, but contained too. The insight into birdwatching was particularly apt and surprising. Everything tied together so beautifully I would, for once, reread it.
I love Shetland, the TV adaptation of Ann Cleeves’s novels, and this book explains some of the back story of the characters (Cassie, Duncan). Jimmy was more interesting than in the BBC version, though, and darker. I think I like my Scottish detectives darker …
